The coach pointed at the ‘seven great Italian teams’ above them and said it’s not a given ‘to be constantly eighth’.
“If we look at what we have done and where we started three years ago, we must be happy and proud,” De Zerbi said at a press conference.
“I hope our fans are proud too because it’s not easy. To be consistently eighth, behind the seven great Italian teams is not obvious.”
The Neroverdi coach didn’t want to set any new targets for the side and continues to aim to secure mathematical salvation before anything else.
“Until we close the topic from a mathematical point of view, we must keep the light turned on,” he said. “Even if this doesn’t remove the ambition to look ahead.”
De Zerbi said he often used Saturday’s opponents Bologna as ‘an example’ when he first started in the job at the Mapei Stadium.
“Bologna have a clear identity,” he explained. “I often took them as an example with my players in the first year here.
“Because Bologna went to every pitch to try to win.”
