Among the current unresolved issues at Inter is the contract situation of central defender Stefan De Vrij, whose current deal with the Nerazzurri expires at the end of the 2022-23 season.

Initially, the Dutchman had been eyeing up a move away from San Siro in favour of a new experience abroad, but as of yet, no solid offers outside of Italy have come in.

In lieu of any offers from abroad, De Vrij has turned his attention back to a renewal of his current contract with Inter according to Calciomercato.

The report claims that the former Lazio centre-back has the option to renew his deal with Inter for a further two seasons on roughly the same figures that he earns now, which would run until he turns 33.

However a renewal on those terms depends on Inter’s Champions League qualification for next season, and with the top four race in Serie A so tight with just six games to go, everything hangs in the balance.

As per Calciomercato, if Inter were to finish the season outside the top four, Inter will be required to lower their wage bill and as a result, the €4 million per season they can currently offer De Vrij would likely become just over €2 million.

If there is no Champions League football for the Nerazzurri in the 2023-24 season, De Vrij will face an ultimatum: accept a wage decrease, or move elsewhere.
