The Netherlands defender Stefan de Vrij doesn’t believe the many own goals and missed penalties have anything to do with the fans being back in the stadiums during Euro 2020.

There have been five own goals in the European Championship so far this summer and at the same time there’s a historically high rate of missed penalties.

Inter defender De Vrij admitted he doesn’t have an explanation for the negative record this summer, but doesn’t think the fans should get the blame.

“There are a lot of televisions, so it’s obvious that we watch a lot of games,” De Vrij said at a press conference.

“We have seen several own goals and missed penalties, frankly I can’t provide an explanation for that.

“It it’s because the fans are back in the stadiums? I don’t think so, the players usually manage to isolate themselves during the games.”
