Lega Serie A President Luigi De Siervo warns failing to complete the season would mean “foreign clubs could pillage our football and snatch our champions at cut-price.”

The debate on when – or even if – to resume the season after it was halted on March 10 continues, with the most likely start date now May 27-June 3.

While some clubs, above all Brescia, are eager to terminate the campaign here, others insist it would be disastrous.

While some clubs, above all Brescia, are eager to terminate the campaign here, others insist it would be disastrous.

“Not playing would mean foreign clubs could pillage our football and come to snatch our champions at cut-price,” Lega Serie A President De Siervo was quoted in La Repubblica newspaper.

“The players who did remain would have their salaries cut, the clubs would go into the red and the best talents would emigrate elsewhere.”

The Netherlands and Belgium have already called their seasons to a close, although the matter might not be entirely resolved there either.

FC Utrecht announced they are preparing legal action after losing a potential place in Europe, because the KNVB Cup was cancelled before their Final against Feyenoord.
