Lega Serie A CEO Luigi De Siervo claims the Italian division is ‘the most exciting in Europe, because everywhere else it’s the same old names who win all the time.’

There was something of a revival of Calcio last season, with Italian teams reaching the Final of the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League.

Of the four Champions League semi-finalists, two were from the same city of MilanInter and AC Milan – leading to a fascinating Derby della Madonnina.

Above all, the last four editions of the Scudetto have been won by four different clubs, specifically Juventus, Inter, Milan and Napoli.

“This is the most exciting league in Europe,” said De Siervo at an event.

“If you analyse the results on the pitch, look at the number of goals scored, we are the most spectacular. Nobody can feel they are in control of the league. It is vivacious, unpredictable, whereas everywhere else it’s the same old names who win all the time.”

In comparison, Manchester City have won five of the last six editions of the Premier League, interrupted only in 2019-20 by Liverpool.

The last time a club other than Barcelona, Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid won LaLiga was way back in 2003-04.

Bayern Munich have won 11 Bundesliga titles on the bounce, while Paris Saint-Germain won five of the last six Ligue 1 seasons.

De Siervo also hailed the technological advances in Serie A, which has been at the absolute forefront of modernising the refereeing of the sport.

It was the first major league to introduce VAR and the first to bring in semi-automatic offside technology.

“I believe that Serie A has decided to invest in transparency and we’ll continue that by publishing the audio of conversations between referee and VAR.”
