Mattia De Sciglio insists Milan ‘deserved to win’ the Derby della Madonnina on Sunday night.

The Rossoneri were defeated 1-0 by city rivals Inter, but the Italian international believes the result was not a fair reflection of the match.

“Losing the derby like that left us with huge disappointment in terms of the result,” De Sciglio admitted in an interview with Milan Channel.

“In terms of the play, I think we deserved to win. Unfortunately derby games are like that, and it takes just a single episode to decide the game.

“From the point of view of our play, we did much better than in the first two games. We found the form we’d shown in pre-season. I think we’re on the right path.

“We have to continue on this path with the same desire that we showed on Sunday. On a personal level I’m happy with my performance, because the performance of the whole team was positive.

“Clearly though, the end result meant I couldn’t fully enjoy the performance we put in. As for other the reviews [of my performance], some journalists do player ratings and comments before they’ve even watched the match.

“It’s not something that interests me. People who know football know how to watch it and judge without being influenced.”

Sunday’s match saw the return to action of Riccardo Montolivo and Mario Balotelli, and De Sciglio had words of praise for his teammates.

“Montolivo? It was definitely important to get him back. He’s technically very good, and the fluidity of his play is important. That’s not to say we need him more than Nigel [De Jong] though.

“As for Mario, he’s doing well, and he’s working hard in training. We hope he can continue like this, because the Mario we saw on Sunday will really help us for the rest of the season.”

The Rossoneri welcome Palermo to San Siro on Saturday night, and the defender warns they will have to be alert.

“They’ve been a team we’ve always struggled against in the past,” De Sciglio cautioned.

“They’re an organised team, and they’ve done well in the first three games. They’re an organised team, so like any match, it won't be easy.

“We’ll have to be even more focused and committed than in the derby.”
