The 27-year-old Esposito fought for his life in hospital for 53 days before his death.

Antonella Leardi, the mother of Esposito, was at the preliminary hearing yesterday where friends of De Santis greeted his arrival with cries of ‘Forza Daniele’.

“The pain that I feel today is immense, similar to what you feel during childbirth when the midwife takes your new-born son,” she said to Gazzetta dello Sport.

“The Ultras have never apologised to me. But they don’t have to present themselves to me – on day they will have to explain what they have done to God.”
