“We started the season by conceding a few too many goals, but also scoring a great deal. Now we have become more solid defensively and found a stronger balance overall,” the team manager told Sky Sport Italia.

“The coach has been very clear in his directives and the players working hard to absorb his teachings. We have been able to create a sense of consistency even with many players missing, as the group has a unity about it.”

They can reach the Round of 32 with a point, but can also snatch the group top spot from Borussia Monchengladbach.

Florenzi starts this evening, but has been repeatedly left on the bench for big games by Paulo Fonseca.

“The club is strong and the players, including Florenzi, all accept the decisions of the coach. Florenzi has behaved like a real captain and we are pleased to see the team living up to expectations.”

Smalling is on loan from Manchester United, but Roma are in negotiations to buy him outright.

“It is well known that we are trying to find a solution that makes everyone happy. We are in no rush, we want to get this right, and can also rely on the player, who said he is happy at Roma.”
