Mauro Zarate has asserted that Daniele De Rossi played a ‘very important’ role in Boca Juniors’ title success, despite his lack of games.

Zarate spent several years in Italy, playing for the likes of Lazio, Inter and Fiorentina, and he admits the country’s struggles to contain coronavirus have hit home.

“I often talk to him, in fact I did recently. It’s all very complicated in Italy,” the 3e-year-old told Ole.

“It’s sad because I spent many years there. I have friends and relatives there, and I also talk to them very often.

“I pray to God that the situation improves.”

De Rossi managed just seven appearances for Boca last season, but he still left Argentina and football behind with a Superliga winner’s medal.

“We haven’t talked about it. Daniele was very important for us, on and off the pitch.

“As a player and person, I already knew him from Italy. We faced each other many times, me playing for Lazio and him playing for Roma.

“And now, as a teammate, I have nothing but positive things to say about him.”
