Daniele De Rossi admits he renewed with Roma because the fans couldn’t lose both him and Francesco Totti.
Er Pupone played his final game for the Giallorossi against Genoa on Sunday, and De Rossi’s contract was due to expire on June 30.
The midfielder, like Totti, has spent his entire career with the club, and he’s ready to step into the captaincy role.
“For almost all the Roma fans it would have been a shame to lose both me and Francesco together,” De Rossi said in an interview on the club’s official Facebook page.

“It would have been undeserved. I’ll live this profession with passion and I think I’m a worthy successor to Francesco in terms of feeling.
“My role changes very little, since I was the oldest after him, and I won’t have specific tasks to do next season.
“His absence will be hard for all of us, and we have to turn those tears into something that can help us.
“Have I stopped crying? I tried not to do it at the stadium. I saw incredible testimonies, like my wife who had tears in her eyes and doesn’t care about football.
“Roma is our family and it’s different for me, because there are four or five people I’ve always worked with and he is one of them.
“From tomorrow I’ll come to work and he won’t be there anymore, and that will definitely have an effect.
“I asked not to talk about it [my renewal] on Sunday because it was Totti’s day, but the agreement was already there.”
