Marten de Roon is looking forward to facing Italy in the Nations League for the Netherlands. ‘It’s thanks to Atalanta I reached the national team.’

The midfielder has 15 senior caps for the Dutch side and is expected to feature in Monday’s match in Amsterdam.

“We already played two years ago in a friendly, even if both teams at the time were still in the construction phase of their projects,” said De Roon in his press conference.

“I have a good rapport with Italy, as it’s thanks to Atalanta that I reached the national team.”

The Netherlands are playing under an interim coach, Dwight Lodeweges, after Ronald Koeman left to take the Barcelona job.

There were reports the Dutch players had suggested Henk ten Cate to the Federation as their first choice for the permanent role.

“That’s completely absurd. We never mentioned any name, we just said it was good to continue the path already set by Koeman,” assured De Roon.

“We like working with Lodeweges and Patrick Lodewijks, have found a good style of football, and the name of the permanent coach is up to the directors.”
