The Dea are through to the last 16 of the tournament after a resounding 3-0 win at Shakhtar Donetsk, and the Dutchman revealed how the 1-1 draw with Manchester City helped prepare them.

“We are all too happy, I have no words,” De Roon told Tuttomercatoweb after the match. “We were amazing. I still don’t believe what we did.

“The second half against City gave us great confidence, then we played a great match against Dinamo Zagreb and we were lucky Dinamo and Shakhtar drew twice.”

About the match, De Roon felt the Ukrainians made a mistake with their tactics and that Atalanta “deserved” the victory.

“We played a great match. In the first half we created three or four big chances, they were wrong about pressing us.

“Then in the second half we dominated and deserved the win. After the sending-off for Shakhtar it was almost done, they couldn’t do much more.”
