Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis reiterated his opposition to the Super League project but did have some suggested reforms to the Champions League.

Juventus president Andrea Agnelli – alongside Real Madrid’s Florentino Perez and Barcelona’s Joan Laporta – tried to launch the Super League project with nine other clubs back in April 2021.

The proposed competition, which would essentially replace the Champions League, was planned to feature 20 teams and drew widespread opposition from supporters, in part due to the closed nature of the competition and risks to national leagues.

Speaking to Radio 24, De Laurentiis was asked if he and Napoli would support a new Super League launch and how he would change the Champions League.

“No, absolutely not. I told Agnelli ‘never’ because he wanted to make it for an elite group of clubs. I’d say that today it’s wrong to allow UEFA to collect €800m with Champions League, Europa League and Conference League.

“I’d say, let’s have a European league where we don’t do the draw with balls, it’s not like we’re in the third world?

“The top six of a major league or the top ones of a smaller league must play against all the others in a one-off game.

“These gentlemen do not know that the virtual fan, i.e. the one who has to pay for the season ticket to watch the game, wants new football.”

Last month, fresh plans were unveiled for a new Super League project, which could be an open competition featuring up to 80 teams across multiple divisions. There would be no permanent members in this new competition and would be a minimum of 14 matches per season.
