President Aurelio De Laurentiis sent a message to fans, his old coach Maurizio Sarri and the big stars who left this summer. ‘This is certainly my best Napoli side.’

The Partenopei beat Udinese 3-2 to ensure they end 2022 with a run of 11 consecutive Serie A victories, putting them temporarily 11 points clear at the top of the table.

De Laurentiis took to social media after this latest win at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona to congratulate his club, at the same time taking some pointed swipes at their predecessors.

“Udinese concludes an extraordinary run of success,” wrote De Laurentiis on Twitter.

“This is certainly my best Napoli side. We stop for two weeks, but will resume with the same hunger and tenacity, aware of our strength.

“A sincere thanks to the team, the staff and all the directors and collaborators. Naturally, thank you to our marvellous fans and my son Edoardo in his role as vice-president.

“We achieve important results only if the whole team is working in the best way. And that is precisely what is happening.

“Forza Napoli always.”

De Laurentiis had been criticised by the fans and media this summer for seemingly weakening the squad by letting Lorenzo Insigne, Dries Mertens and David Ospina all leave as free agents, selling Kalidou Koulibaly to Chelsea.

However, their results have been extraordinary in both Serie A and the Champions League, topping their group to set up a Round of 16 tie against Eintracht Frankfurt.

De Laurentiis is a cinema mogul who took over Napoli following bankruptcy in 2004, bringing them back to the top from Serie C.

They twice came very close to winning the Scudetto under Sarri, winning three Coppa Italia titles and one Supercoppa Italiana.
