Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis reveals the rumours of broadcasters offering half the asking price for Serie A television rights were if anything too generous. ‘It’s less than that.’

De Laurentiis is one of the figures in charge of the process of selling the Serie A television rights within the Italian territory.

It was hoped they’d get a combined figure of €1.2 billion per year from the three broadcasters bidding, Sky Sport Italia, DAZN and Mediaset.

There were reports that the bids instead only reached half that, approximately €600m.

Now the Napoli chief admits the rumours if anything understated the extent of the problem.

“It’s less than that,” he told Radiocor.

“We knew the bids would be low.”

Now the Lega Serie A begins to negotiate private deals with the three broadcasters to split up 10 games per round.

It is nothing new, as they eventually accepted an offer from DAZN for the 2021-24 seasons that was €300m more than their original offer.
