Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis has insisted that it is impossible to win the Serie A title every season without cheating, but has promised that the Partenopei will regain the Scudetto in the near future.
ADL was in attendance at the ceremony for Luciano Spalletti in Naples on Thursday, during which the Italy CT was granted honorary citizenship of the city.
The two have recently made amends following a falling-out towards the end of the 2022-23 season, which largely influenced Spalletti’s decision to leave Napoli immediately after his Scudetto success.
Speaking to reporters after the event, De Laurentiis said: I promise you that the extraordinary experience of winning the Scudetto is repeatable.”
However, he also added: “You cannot win the Scudetto without cheating. Winning it requires a specific set of conditions, which are not always going to be the same. And the players, even if there hasn’t been much change in the squad, do not always respond in the same way.
“We are not the only team in the championship, other teams are always looking to strengthen as well.
“We were fortunate to find players from teams in Europe who were not doing particularly well in their championships. We also had that bit of luck, which you always need in life. Without that luck, you don’t often get those magic combinations you need to succeed.”
