Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis said former Partenopei star Jorginho ‘is not a penalty taker’ after another miss for the Azzurri on Friday night.

Italy drew 1-1 with Switzerland in Rome and are thus playing to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Northern Ireland on Monday.

Jorginho desperate after penalty miss

Silvan Widmer opened the scoring before Napoli full-back Giovanni Di Lorenzo scored the equaliser in the first half.

“It’s not the first goal he scores,” De Laurentiis replied when Il Corriere dello Sport asked him if he was happy for the Napoli star’s goal with the Azzurri.

Chelsea midfielder Jorginho, who missed a penalty in the first leg against Switzerland, was given another opportunity in the 90th minute on Friday.

The Brazilian-born midfielder blasted the penalty over the bar and his former President decided to take part in the discussion regarding Italy’s penalty takers.

Mancini: ‘Jorginho was right to take penalty’

“I’m sorry that they always ask those who are not penalty takers,” he said. “If Insigne had stayed on the pitch, would he have taken it? Maybe it would have been better.”

Jorginho, who missed a penalty in the shootout against England in the EURO 2020 Final too, has missed two penalties during the World Cup qualifiers.

He has previously scored two for the Azzurri, against Armenia and against Poland.
