Napoli chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis admits he ‘used’ Andrea Agnelli against funds that wanted to invest in Serie A: ‘They wouldn’t allow him to create the Super League.’

Four private investment funds were in talks to acquire commercial activities and TV rights of Serie A in 2020.

De Laurentiis was among the Serie A presidents who didn’t want to sell assets to private equity funds as he believed a potential deal would not favour Italian football.

The Partenopei President explained his strategy and how he allegedly used ex-Juventus President Andrea Agnelli to make negotiations fall apart.

“I used Mr Agnelli because I needed him to make talks with funds collapse,” he told Report.

“Those at the Lega were so desperate they’d sell assets to funds for a piece of bread. I used Agnelli because it was clear that if a fund had taken over, he wouldn’t be allowed to create the Super League. This is why he attacked the funds.”

The full interview will be aired tonight. Report is an investigative TV show that will go through the Prisma investigation involving Juventus.

Agnelli resigned as Juventus President at the end of November. The board of directors will take place this week, precisely on Wednesday, January 18.

The preliminary hearing for the Prisma investigation into Juventus will occur on March 27.
