Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has reportedly been assigned police protection due to rising tensions between him and a section of the club’s fanbase.

The Partenopei ultras were silent in the 4-0 loss to Milan in Serie A last weekend, protesting over the ticket prices at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona and the strict enforcement of security measures for banners and flags.

The mood was not helped by Napoli’s tough Champions League loss to Milan in the first leg of the quarter-finals, raising the tension in a key moment of the season.

As reported by ANSA, the Prefecture of Naples has decided to assign De Laurentiis police protection due to the tension with the Napoli fans, a sign of the discontent in the Campania capital.

Luciano Spalletti’s side are only weeks away from lifting their first Scudetto in over three decades and wild celebrations are expected in the city of Naples.
