Jonathan De Guzman’s agent confirms the Napoli midfielder could join Marseille ‘this week’, but ‘everything can change’.

The 27-year-old joined the Partenopei last summer, but is not part of new Coach Maurizio Sarri’s plans for the new season, and is set to move to Ligue 1.

“When Jonathan came to Napoli, he spoke to [former Coach Rafa] Benitez, who considered him interesting for his style of play,” Fabio Parisi explained in an interview with Radio Crc.

“Now, with a new Coach with new strategies, things are different and we’re working to find a solution which will be good for the player and the club.

“Marseille have always been interested, but the decision has been delayed as they’re choosing their new Coach.

“At the moment there are no meetings scheduled with the Neapolitan club, but soon I’ll meet with [sporting director Cristiano] Giuntoli to set the details of the negotiation.

“We’re talking about a very interesting club [Marseille], with a big supporter base, and it’s a destination Jonathan would like.

“That said, it’s obvious that in the transfer market everything can change at any time. Both the French club and the Neapolitans want to close things soon, so this week could be the one.

“There won’t be any players in exchange, though at first [OM defender] Doria was considered.”

Parisi was then asked if he felt his client was giving up too readily, having only spent one season at San Paolo.

“I’m sorry, but there’s no point staying if the player knows that the Coach isn’t willing to invest a lot of faith in him.”
