Fiorentina goalkeeper David De Gea has sent out a cryptic message over social media, using the 🤌 emoji, following the sacking of Manchester United coach Erik Ten Hag, the Spaniard’s former boss at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag was officially sacked by Manchester United on Monday, following his side’s 2-1 loss to West Ham United on Sunday, which has left the team swinging in 14th place in the Premier League.

De Gea’s message has caused a bit of a stir online, as fans have been left speculating over the exact reason for his tweet.

Many feel that the sacking of Ten Hag, who replaced De Gea with former Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana at Manchester United, is the most likely reason. Ten Hag and his former goalkeeper did not enjoy the smoothest of relationships at Old Trafford, according to multiple reports.

Another potential reason, some have suggested, is the rumoured decision to hand the Ballon d’Or to De Gea’s former Spain teammate Rodri, instead of Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr

There have also been suggestions that the post was in response to Fiorentina’s thumping 5-1 victory over Roma in Serie A on Sunday evening, although that is less likely as a scenario, as the ‘keeper had already made several social media posts about the game in the immediate aftermath.

The 33-year-old officially joined Firoentina as a free agent towards the end of the summer transfer window, following a year out of the game after the expiry of his Manchester United contract last summer. He had been a stalwart at Old Trafford since 2011.
