Belgium playmaker Kevin de Bruyne said the Red Devils ‘tried everything to win’ against Italy. ‘Getting eliminated is always a disappointment’.

The Manchester City star was a constant threat for the Azzurri, but never managed to beat Gianluigi Donnarumma in the Italy goal.

Romelu Lukaku pulled one back right before half-time, but at the other end, De Bruyne felt Belgium could have done more to stop Nicolò Barella’s opener.

It eventually ended in a 2-1 defeat for Roberto Martinez’s men, but De Bruyne stressed the Red Devils gave their all to beat the Azzurri.

“I think we tried everything to win that match,” De Bruyne told BBC after the match. “They scored a fantastic goal, but the first one may have been a mistake on our part.

“They had more possession, and the ball didn’t go in for us, which is a shame. Getting eliminated is always a disappointment.”

Italy have set up a semi-final clash with Spain, who arrive from beating Switzerland on penalties, as the match finished 1-1 after 120 minutes in St. Petersburg.
