Belgium star Kevin De Bruyne admits he played with torn ligaments in Belgium’s 2-1 loss against Italy last night.

The 30-year-old had suffered an ankle injury in the Round of 16 tie against Portugal last week and had been in doubt for the game against the Azzurri, having hardly trained with the rest of his team during the days before the match.

However, the Manchester City star started for Belgium and remained on the pitch for the entire game.

He also came close to scoring but was denied by a superb Gigio Donnarumma save in the first half.

De Bruyne didn’t look 100 per cent fit throughout the game and confirmed after the final whistle he was able to play despite a ligaments injury.

“It was a miracle that I played today because there was definitely damage to my ankle. A tear in my ligaments. But I felt the responsibility to play for my country today. Too bad I couldn’t do more,” the 30-year-old told UEFA.com.

“For me personally, it has been four or five weird weeks. But I especially want to thank the medical staff,” he continued.

Injuries continue to torment the Manchester City star who had had a minor surgery on the eye socket he injured during the Champions League Final that Pep Guardiola’s side lost against Chelsea this past May.
