Roberto D’Aversa felt the 4-0 scoreline was ‘excessive’ on Sampdoria, especially after the first half performance, but Napoli were ‘clinical.’

The Blucerchiati went into the break 2-0 down after Victor Osimhen and Fabian Ruiz strikes, then the Nigerian completed his brace after restart with a Piotr Zielinski scorcher.

“It’s disappointing, because in my view this defeat is excessive considering what we did on the field,” the coach told DAZN.

“We had more possession in the first half and frankly that’s rare against Napoli. They were clinical in making the most of every little mistake we made, plus David Ospina had that miraculous double save, when the game could’ve been transformed.

“It hurts to see 4-0 when we deserved a different result, especially in the first half. I don’t think we fell away physically, if anything it was our confidence that was sapped by the goals.”
