Sampdoria coach Roberto D’Aversa protects Denmark international Mikkel Damgsgaard ahead of the new season. ‘You mustn’t burden him with too many responsibilities’.

The Dane excelled at Samp last season and had a great Euros with his national team, leading to rumours of a possible departure this summer.

But Damsgaard is still at Sampdoria ahead of the first game against Milan in Serie A and D’Aversa wants to give him a chance to shine without too much pressure on his shoulders.

“You mustn’t burden him with too many responsibilities,” D’Aversa told Il Secolo XIX. “He has great qualities.

“You can see it from the way he kicks the ball, from his oriented stop, from how he reads the game. He can start, then we will see his autonomy.”

The 21-year-old arrived from Nordsjaelland in September 2020 and signed a four-year contract with the Blucerchiati.

He has since played 38 times with Samp and contributed two goals and four assists in his first season with the club.
