Roberto D’Aversa was satisfied with Sampdoria’s hard-fought 1-1 draw with Roma this evening.

The Ligurian side did not let Jose Mourinho’s team overwhelm them but they still fell 1-0 down after 72 minutes, with Eldor Shomurodov finding the back of the net. Manolo Gabbiadini rescued a point for D’Aversa’s side with his 80th minute equaliser.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN after the match, D’Aversa analysed the draw, detailing how ‘I think in the first half the team played much better than in the second. We were looking for the low build-up. In the second half the guys made me angry because they stopped playing and started playing long balls.

‘Then you have to understand the value of the opponent and prepare for the match to bring home a positive result. I have to say that if Candreva had scored we would probably be talking about a different result. Although we went behind, we didn’t lose our balance and we recovered the game. In the end the result is fair.’

Sampdoria’s draw with Roma sees them remain in 15th place in the Serie A table after 19 games, sitting three points ahead of Venezia and four points behind 13th place Sassuolo. They are tied on points with Udinese, who have a game in hand.

The Ligurian side’s next game is against a struggling Cagliari side on January 6, after the Christmas break. The team have looked more dangerous in recent weeks, with Gabbiadini finding the back of the net in the last five consecutive matches.
