Udinese defender Danilo has been sentenced to a year in prison after being found guilty of racist abuse by a court in Brazil.
The incident occurred during the 2010 Copa do Brasil when he was playing for Palmeiras. A Brazilian court found Danilo guilty of spitting in the face of Atletico Paranaense player Manoel and calling him a “monkey.”
The 28-year-old was handed the sentence by the Sao Paolo Criminal Court today, but he is expected to have the punishment reduced to a €127,000 fine on appeal.
Danilo joined Udinese in the summer of 2011 and has featured in 25 games for the Friulani this season.
