In an extraordinary coincidence, Daniel Maldini followed in the footsteps of his father Paolo by scoring a Serie A goal against a Cagliari side with Claudio Ranieri as coach.

The football family keeps marching on, as Daniel Maldini has scored three goals in his last four games since joining Monza on loan from Milan in January.

He curled in a sensational free kick in off the underside of the crossbar to seal today’s 1-0 win over Cagliari.

Curiously, one of only 29 Serie A career goals scored by Paolo Maldini was also against Cagliari in February 1991.

During that 1-1 draw with Milan, the coach sitting on the Cagliari bench was – just like today – Claudio Ranieri.

Daniel Maldini would not be born for another decade, in October 2001, but Ranieri returned to the Sardinian side after almost 22 years, helping them win promotion from Serie B.

It must be a rare feat for a coach to have both a father and son score against his teams.
