Daniel Maldini makes history as third generation to play for Italy

Daniel Maldini has made history with his Italy debut, as for the first time ever three generations of the same family have played for the Azzurri, 22 years after father Paolo.

The midfielder came off the bench during the Nations League match against Israel at the Bluenergy Stadium in Udine this evening.

The Monza man, who came up through the Milan youth academy and turned 23 on October 11, therefore follows in the footsteps of his father Paolo and grandfather Cesare.

Paolo was in the stands with wife Adriana to watch the moment, the player’s mother filming it on her phone to preserve it.

Maldini family through the ages for Azzurri

The last Maldini to represent Italy was Paolo, who amassed 126 senior caps and scored seven goals.

Cesare was not only a player, but also assistant manager for Enzo Bearzot when Italy won the 1982 World Cup and had a stint as senior coach from January 1997 to July 1998.

He died in April 2016 at the age of 84.

Paolo Maldini was aged 19 years, 9 months and 5 days when making his senior Italy debut on March 31, 1988.
