Mikkel Damsgaard says he’s learned a lot at Sampdoria but admits he doesn’t speak much with club President Massimo Ferrero: ‘He doesn’t speak English very well…’

The 21-year-old has begun his second campaign at the Stadio Ferraris, but there are more expectations for him this season.

The Denmark international scored two goals and delivered four assists in 37 appearances in all competitions last term and was one of the best performers at the Euros during the summer.

“I’ve learned a whole lot [in Italy]. It is a huge change from Denmark, so you just have to get used to it,” the Danish starlet told bold.dk.

“The first year, I was really very much alone, and you have to manage many things by yourself.

“Abroad is just something completely different, and it’s a little difficult to explain. You have to get used to the style of play and the people, which can be completely different from those in Denmark. I feel I have learned a lot from it and I will continue to do so.”

Damsgaard believes Denmark’s playing style suits him more than Sampdoria’s: “On the national team, we are a top team and we usually keep the ball a lot, so that way it might suit me better,” he admitted.

“At club level, we may not have the ball as much, especially when we meet big teams like Juventus and Napoli, so there we will run more after the ball. So in that way, you can say that the national team suits me better.”

Damsgaard was linked with many top clubs in the summer, including Juventus, Milan and Tottenham, but he hasn’t spoken about his future with Sampdoria’s president Ferrero and the reason is quite simple.

“He is funny, but I have not talked so much with him, because he does not speak English very well, and I do not speak Italian well enough,” the 21-year-old said.

Damsgaard joined Sampdoria from Nordsjaelland in 2020 and his contract with the Blucerchiati runs out in June 2024.
