The Nerazzurri struggled to break Genoa down at Marassi, until Romelu Lukaku battered through their defences, with D’Ambrosio nodding in to seal a 2-0 result.

“It was not an easy game, because no games are easy in Serie A, it’s all about how we approach it,” D’Ambrosio told Sky Sport Italia.

“I agree with what the coach said, nobody has dominated us this season, and we deserved more points. This evening, we dominated Genoa from start to finish, got the goals we needed, kept a clean sheet and brought the victory home.

“We have been saying since the start that in order to aim high, we need to work as a team defending first and attacking later. That doesn’t mean playing defensively, it means controlling the game and not giving the ball away cheaply.”

Next up is the Champions League trip to Shakhtar Donetsk, who are fresh from a 3-2 win away to Real Madrid.

“We know it’s a tough match, so if we go to Ukraine and think we might win easily, we’re making a huge mistake. We beat them last season, but cannot expect a similar outcome. They have a lot of quality and physicality upfront.”
