There is still lots of tension in the air among Genoa and Sampdoria supporters after last night’s Coppa Italia clash and the subsequent fighting on the streets, as recent updates confirm that an act of vandalism was committed near a shrine dedicated to the late Gianluca Vialli.
Damage at Vialli tribute after Genoa-Sampdoria
Genoa and Sampdoria met for the first time in around two years in the Coppa Italia on Tuesday night, with the Blucerchiati progressing on penalties.
There were violent scenes long into the night after the final whistle, with over 30 people injured according to the latest updates from La Gazzetta dello Sport.
As the troubles kicked-off near the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, the eastern pier on the city’s coastline, where there is a tribute for the late Vialli, was vandalised at some stage of the night, as the area had been left fairly unprotected.
Footage from Il Secolo XIX shows that several scarves that were left as a tribute to the legendary former Italy striker had been torn or cut down in a tasteless act of unnecessary vandalism.
Vialli spent eight seasons on Sampdoria’s books, scoring 85 goals from 223 Serie A appearances, before moving to Juventus in 1992.
