Lega Serie A President Paolo Dal Pino hits back at Amanda Staveley, saying PCP Capital Partners opted to invest in Newcastle rather than Inter or Milan because they prefer utilitarian vehicles over Formula 1 cars.

Last week,  the managing director of PCP Capital Partners revealed that the group had considered buying a majority stake in Inter and Milan before acquiring Newcastle.

Staveley: ‘PIF talked to Inter, but Serie A is a mess’

“We talked to Inter Milan, but the problem was the structure of the league was a mess,” she said.

Lega Serie A President, Paolo Dal Pino didn’t hold back and replied during Sport Industry, organized by RCS Academy.

“If Amanda Staveley preferred to invest in Newcastle than Inter or Milan, you can see that she likes utilitarian cars and not Formula 1,” Dal Pino said, as quoted by Calciomercato.com.

“We have eight foreign properties, seven American and one Chinese who believed in Serie A and believe there is potential for growth.”

The Serie A clubs owned by foreign businessmen are Bologna, Spezia, Venezia, Milan, Inter, Fiorentina, Roma and Genoa.

Miami-based firm 777 Partners acquired a majority stake in Genoa last month. All the above-mentioned Serie A clubs are run by American owners, except Inter, who are owned by the Chinese group Suning.

“When you invest, you look at the potential of the market in which you operate,” Dal Pino continued.

“The moment you look at Italian football, you see that it is a great opportunity because it has unexpressed potential like no other league. When all the big international funds look at Serie A, they do it because there’s potential.

“It’s up to us to pull that potential out now. I sincerely prefer to have 90% of a thing that in five or six years is worth €30 billion, rather than 100% of a thing that today is worth 17 may lose value in a few years.

“We have the duty to create value, not only for Italian investors but also for those who come from abroad.”

  1. Shut up fool, you just embarass yourself. If there is potential, who`s job is to bring that potentia to life?!

  2. I said it last week, she clearly spoke out of ignorance, I don’t even think Elliot Group who owns AC Milan would have even listened to her, Inter maybe , they are not as financially stable as AC, why I said she spoke out of ignorance is because both AC and Inter will be quicker to build a lasting and winning project , they both have well structured managements and very good squads that you merely have to spend between a €100 to €150 million yours , or even less than that to have a competitive team that can win even the UCL, they both have world class training centres and youth facilities, the only issue is the stadium, which they are currently working hard to build another stadium that will propel them further.
Let’s look at Newcastle United , the management is broken, the squad needs to spend a serious amount of money in the coming transfer windows, to even survive relegation, and then spend more money to be even a top 10 team, they do not have a cutting edge training facility.
Then you look at both cities , can you honestly compare Milan and Newcastle..?
Milan is a bigger cosmopolitan city which is more elegant , classy , mobile, with state of the art hotels, attractions and leisure facilities, with historical locations, which would attract more money and rich crowd to come and watch the club’s.
Newcastle is a cold and quite frankly not a tourist destination, or where people travel to enjoy life.
I don’t even think the Group that bought Newcastle could even afford both the Milanese teams…
And another thing I want to point out, all the American Investors buying serie a teams know the Gold mine these teams and the cities they are located in could turn too, if u notice all the cities the club’s owned by American owners bought are very beautiful cities located near the coast or a tourist locations, they recognise that they can use the club’s to attract rich people to come and visit these cities, and all of them have started other investments within these cities that will attract money.
She can say what she has to say, she is just justifying her choice, they will spend tonnes and tonnes of money before the team survives relegation and even be a regular 10th position team .

  3. I think it’s madness not wanting to invest in Serie A and AC Milan especially. They already have a competitive young team, that with the right Targeted signings could be world beaters. Inter are also a ready built club so have your crumbly Newcastle love. Someone with a brain cell and deep pockets could work wonders at 1 of these clubs. Forza Milan! Rossonero!

  4. Usman is correct. They probably couldn’t even afford either of the milanese clubs. If they could of, they would have. Probably got quoted near to a billion for either club which when you consider the teams are already competitive, would probably be a similar cost as rebuilding Newcastle. They may even get relegated this season so no top players will join in January. Its to risky. Staveley you bought the wrong club. Your a fool

  5. She talked with the arrogance of a majority stakeholder and all she owns is 10% of poor Newcastle …

    LOL

Usman is right……good luck with that sunny weather in Newcastle 🙂

  6. Everything @Usman + Dal Pino said ring’s true. Italian football’s potential is huge. The value is already there. Italy just need’s to capitalise on + grow it better. And that woman should focus on making Newcastle competitive, rather than trash-talking other league’s! Maybe Inter or Milan did turn her down? It’s likely that they weren’t willing to drop to a bargain bin price + that’s her cheap-shot back, or tactic to try to get them to knock the price down in future. Still, shooting a barb like that is poor business sense? What if Inter suddenly did become obtainable at a knockdown price, due to worsening debt + arrear’s? Multiple competitive bids to own a club like Inter, would mean that they’re not as likely to choose someone with a sour-faced attitude like her’s to sell to? Even if it is “just” promoting her new club + league, then it’s still backfired as Dal Pino’s response is accurate + kinda funny too!
