Remarkably, this tiny Calabrian club defied all expectation over the last two years, earning their first ever promotion and now in their second Serie A campaign, having avoided relegation in the final round. They were leading the Serie B table for most of 2015-16, but were eventually pipped to first place by Cagliari, only one point between them.
They are only the third club from Calabria to make it into the top flight after Catanzaro and Reggina. Remarkably, Crotone hadn’t even made it into Serie B until 2000.
The side went bankrupt several times, most recently in 1991, and is based in the poorest region in Italy. The club became known as FC Crotone in 2000-01 and has a shark as its symbol. The Vrenna family has run the club for over 25 years, though controversy was never far away.
