The 36-year-old left Turin in the summer, to make a shock return to Old Trafford in a €15m deal plus €8m add-ons.

Champions League | Probable line-ups: Man United vs. Atalanta

The Portuguese ace is not the only Manchester United player with a past in Serie A.

The likes of Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot have all played in Italy’s top flight.

Dalot spent just one season on loan at Milan in 2020-21 and returned to Manchester in the summer.

Pogba swapped United with Juventus in 2012, returning to Old Trafford in a €100m deal in 2016.

The Frenchman has won six games from six against La Dea, scoring one goal.

Bruno Fernandes played for Udinese and Sampdoria in Serie A and won four games out of seven against Atalanta.

However, the Portuguese ace never scored against Gian Piero Gasperini’s side.

Amad Diallo, a product of Atalanta academy, is in doubt for the game, while former Inter defender Alex Telles is not expected to start, but could come off the bench during the game.
