Bryan Cristante insists Roma are simply ‘unlucky’ so far this season after a 2-1 defeat to Milan, but Romelu Lukaku can ‘make the difference.’

The Giallorossi managed only one point from three Serie A rounds, drawing 2-2 with Salernitana, then falling to back-to-back 2-1 losses against Hellas Verona and Milan.

It is the worst start to a season for Roma since 1950-51 and coach Jose Mourinho refused to speak to the media, so Cristante went to perform the interview duties instead.

“Incidents are making the difference, we conceded six goals from just eight shots on target. Now we need to use the break for international duty to get ourselves back in shape and resume in the best way possible,” the midfielder told DAZN.

Milan were dominating the match at the Olimpico before the Fikayo Tomori red card, leading 2-0 through Olivier Giroud’s penalty and a Rafael Leao volley.

“I don’t think we were lacking sharpness. We created a lot and were very unlucky so far this season. Perhaps we played less well today, but we know that we’ve got to do more to pick up points.”

Paulo Dybala, Sardar Azmoun and Renato Sanches were out injured, and Houssem Aouar limped off in the first half, but Lukaku made his debut in the final 20 minutes.

“Lukaku is one of the best strikers in circulation and he makes the difference everywhere he goes. We are happy that he is here with us.”

The centre-forward arrived yesterday on loan from Chelsea at a cost reported to be in the region of €6m plus bonuses.
