Bryan Cristante reflected on Italy’s Euro 2024 qualifier loss to England, suggesting that the team almost secured a draw and that there isn’t a gulf in quality between the two nations.

The Azzurri looked miserable in the first 45 minutes of their clash with the Three Lions in Naples, conceding two goals, but they bounced back in the second half and looked a different side, clawing one back thanks to debutant Mateo Retegui.

With the top two teams of the group qualifying for Euro 2024, the pressure isn’t too high on Italy just yet, although supporters are expecting a strong reaction in their next game against Malta.

Speaking in a press conference, Cristante first reflected on Italy’s 2-1 loss to England.

“The match against England we could have played differently, but in the second half we played differently, and I don’t see this big gap, honestly. We even risked a draw.

“For tomorrow, if I start on the pitch I’m happy, if I come into the game I’m happy in the same way.”

He was asked if he was part of the changes to Italy’s midfield.

“I have different characteristics, also on a physical level. But I think this is a strong national team, then every game is different and according to the coach’s choices we will adapt.”

The Roma midfielder gave his thoughts on the Azzurri’s upcoming clash with Malta.

“We’ve seen some footage, we’ve seen that they’re an organised national team and like all competitions it’s difficult. We have to take the pitch at 100%, concentrate and play our game.”

Cristante explained where he likes to play in the midfield.

“In a two or three-man midfield I’m lucky enough to be good in all positions, I never exclude one. I am at the coach’s disposal, I try to interpret the role in the best possible way.”

He was asked what the defeat to England meant to Italy.

“Winning is an obligation every game. We started with a defeat, and we cannot afford any more missteps.”

Cristante commented on if his ability to play in multiple roles in midfield was an advantage or disadvantage.

“A disadvantage absolutely not, if you have more opportunities to play in various roles I don’t see where the disadvantage is….

“The competitions on an international level are all very difficult, we cannot afford any drops. We know we are superior, but we have to prove it on the pitch.”

Finally, Cristante was asked if the squad were feeling the pressure ahead of the game with Malta.

“In the national team there is always pressure, every false step is paid for. We have to take to the pitch to win, no ifs, ands or buts. We want the victory.”
