Domenico Criscito had been widely expected to join Toronto FC next week in MLS, but it’s reported the veteran defender has decided to stay with Genoa, at least for the moment.

The centre-back has been out of action for a couple of months with an injury anyway, so has had time to consider his future.

Multiple sources had reported recently that Criscito had agreed a transfer to Toronto FC and, unlike Napoli captain Lorenzo Insigne, he would make the move to Canada immediately.

This would require terminating his contract with Genoa by mutual consent first, but it seems there has been a change of plan.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Criscito has now decided he won’t leave Genoa during their moment of need, as they are in penultimate place and on the verge of relegation.

It is still possible that Criscito will join Toronto FC in July, along with Insigne, but he won’t walk away from Marassi mid-season.

Criscito’s history with Genoa goes way back to his youth level days in 2002, then returning in 2018 after seven years in Russia with Zenit St Petersburg.
