Domenico Criscito reveals that he was no longer part of Genoa‘s plans but thanks his ex-club, explaining that he decided to join Toronto FC to avoid facing the Grifone.

The Italy international rescinded his contract with the Genoa last week and is now heading to Toronto, where he will reunite with his compatriot Lorenzo Insigne.

“I want to clarify that I was open to remaining in Serie B, but I was no longer part of the project. I was offered to remain at the club as a director, but I didn’t want to retire,” he told Il Secolo XIX.

“I had offers from Italy, also from Serie B, but I didn’t want to fight against the team of my heart. That’s why I accepted to go to Toronto. Everyone is saying it was only for an economic reason, but it’s not true. I don’t have a higher salary than at Genoa. I made this choice along with the club and I want to thank them because they allowed me to choose.

“I am leaving, but I will be back as a director. The club and I have agreed that I will have the chance to return here [at the end of his career] and I want to thank Andres Blazquez and the club for this opportunity.”
