The public prosecutor’s office in Udine has confirmed that criminal proceedings have been brought against an Udinese supporter involved in the racist abuse targeted towards Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan during the Rossoneri’s 3-2 victory at the Stadio Friulli on Saturday evening.

The sporting authorities had already begun their investigation into the discriminatory events that took place in the stadium over the weekend, but now, one supporter is also facing criminal action.

Prosecutor Massimo Lia confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that an investigation is still ongoing to clarify the specific details of what happened on Saturday, and to identify any other responsible individuals.

In response to racist chants from the stands during Milan’s game against Udinese, Maignan walked off the pitch, which led the game to be suspended for several minutes.

One Udinese supporter, a 46-year-old from the city of Udine, has already been handed a DASPO order, which bans him from entering stadiums for a period of up to five years.

Udinese have gone one step further, banning the individual for life with immediate effect.

Udinese have also been ordered to play their upcoming Serie A home match against Monza on February 3 behind closed doors in response to Saturday’s incident.
