Mexico international defender Johan Vasquez was relegated with Genoa, but will reportedly remain in Serie A for newly-promoted Cremonese.

The 23-year-old centre-back joined Genoa from UNAM Pumas in August 2021 on loan with an obligation to buy for a total €4m.

However, Genoa’s relegation from Serie A put a spanner in the works and he wanted top flight football.

According to transfer expert KeryNews, Vasquez has now agreed a transfer to Cremonese, who just earned promotion to Serie A.

He is expected to undergo a medical and sign the contract by the end of the week for a one-year loan with option to buy.

Vasquez had been approached by Salernitana, along with clubs in MLS and the Mexican Liga, but was convinced by the promise of regular first team football in Serie A with Cremonese.

The defender made 27 Serie A appearances for Genoa this term, scoring one goal, but was unable to prevent them sliding into Serie B in penultimate place.

He has five senior caps under his belt playing for Mexico, as well as participating in the Olympics last summer.
