The mayor of Cremona, Gianluca Galimberti, has conceded he will ‘consider’ naming the city stadium after local hero Gianluca Vialli, who passed away at the age of 58 on January 6, 2022.

Vialli was born in Cremona, a northern town situated in the Lombardy region, not far from Milan. The striker went through local side Cremonese’s youth ranks before making his Serie B debut with the Grigiorossi, earning a move to Serie A outfit Sampdoria a few seasons later.

Since 1919 Cremonese’s stadium was entitled to Giovanni Zini, the team’s former goalkeeper who passed away during World War I, but mayor Gianluca Galimberti told Rai that dedicating the arena to Vialli is now an option he will discuss with the city council.

“We’ll talk about it with everyone, but it is an option that we’ll be considering without any doubt”, he said.

A city mourning in Cremona was also announced following the news of Vialli’s death.
