Cremonese posted an emotional tribute to Davide Astori ahead of their match against Fiorentina this afternoon.

The Italian centre back tragically passed away in March 2018 at the age of 31 ahead of a league match against Udinese. Tests later revealed that Astori had suffered a cardiac arrest. Astori’s death shook the Italian football world and led to emotional scenes in Florence in the days after the news.

Astori also played for Cremonese in his career, spending a year on loan with the Lombardy club back in the 2007-08 campaign. Ahead of their season opener against Fiorentina, the newly promoted side paid tribute to the former defender, posting a photo of him from that loan spell.

“To play in Serie A after 26 years, and to do it right here in this city…. Today will be a day full of unforgettable emotions, as unforgettable as your memory is, Davide..”

Following his death, Fiorentina renamed their training ground in his honour, calling it the ‘Centro Sportivo Davide Astori’.

Whilst presenting Italy’s Euro 2020 title at a reception at the Quirinal Palace in Rome last year, Giorgio Chiellini referenced Astori in his speech, highlighting that the team “would have liked to have him here with us today.”
