Milan legend Alessandro Costacurta refuses to blame the Rossoneri defenders but insists the main problem for Stefano Pioli is the ‘defensive phase’ so the coach could change system against Inter.

The defending title champions conceded 12 goals in the last three games across all competitions and the last two defeats in Serie A have left them involved in the race for a top-four finish.

“I believe Milan players are accustomed to different systems, but they have to rely on their attitude at the moment,” Costacurta told Sky Sport Italia.

“Tactics can help, but right now defence is the real problem. I think they need to regain defensive solidity to boost their self-confidence.

“They created some good chances against Sassuolo and had two goals disallowed for offside. It’s not about defence as a department, the problem is the defensive phase and adding one midfielder goes towards this direction.”

Pioli will likely use a 4-3-3 system against Inter in the derby della Madonnina on Sunday to offer more protection to his backline.
