Milan legend Alessandro Costacurta believes Malick Thiaw was the Rossoneri’s ‘biggest surprise’ against Tottenham and expects ‘two or three key players’ to return in the second leg in London.
The defending Serie A champions secured a 1-0 win over Tottenham on Tuesday in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16.
“At this moment, Milan’s chances have raised. Probably two or three key players will return in London, Tomori will be very important,” Costacurta, a former Italy international and Milan defender, told Sky Sport Italia.
Tomori missed Tuesday’s match despite training with his teammates on Sunday and Monday. Ismael Bennacer and Mike Maignan were also forced to the sidelines at San Siro, but the Rossoneri hope they will be back in the return leg in London on March 8.
“I believe Milan’s last two games proved they are improving. I see a different attitude,” continued Costacurta.
“I think the new system as an excuse to give the players new motivation. I see a different spirit now and I liked their intensity against Tottenham.”
Brahim Diaz scored the eventual winner after just seven minutes in the first half, but Costacurta believes the Spaniard put in an excellent performance beyond his goal.
“Brahim was running behind every opponent, it’s essential at a European level. Luckily Tottenham were not at their best, too,” noted Costacurta.
The ex-Italian defender also praised Thiaw, who made his Champions League debut against Spurs last night.
“Thiaw was excellent. He is reliable as he has already proved in Serie A. I like his personality when he has the ball, he doesn’t waste possession and always knows what to do.
“He is aggressive, Maldini said that he’s been working hard and I think he was Milan’s biggest surprise.”
The German defender joined Milan on loan with an option to buy from Schalke 04 last summer and the Rossoneri can make his move permanent for circa €6m in June.
