Costacurta: ‘I can’t imagine Milan without Maldini now’

Alessandro Costacurta underlined the importance of Paolo Maldini to Milan and he gave his thoughts on Inter and Juventus’ chances in the title race next season.

The Rossoneri are currently working on tying down the 54-year-old Italian director to a new deal following some delays. Things have been moving a little slowly due to the change of ownership in the Lombardy capital but things are finally entering the final stages.

Speaking to TuttoMercatoWeb, Costacurta first spoke about Maldini’s importance to Milan and his fear of a strategical change.

“I can’t imagine Milan without Paolo Maldini, I don’t think the others are morons, so I imagine that as soon as it is possible Maldini will sign. I don’t even pose the problem myself.

“A radical change of strategy would be detrimental. To me, everything seems to be going very well. The limited budget leads to a lot of ideas, I wouldn’t worry too much about it.”

He gave his thoughts on new Rossoneri signing Divock Origi, who is joining on a free transfer after his contract expires with Liverpool.

“I’ve never been in love with him, but he’s a wonderful player. Like Giroud, he can help out. They are not extraordinary footballers, but to have players like that, like Giroud last year.”

The former defender spoke more highly about Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio.

“He’s a very good footballer, he has so much quality. But we’re here naming so many names when there are so many that could do the trick.”

Costacurta commented on if Inter were the favourites for the Scudetto next season with Romelu Lukaku back.

“Yes, I think they were last year too. Inter were the strongest last year and with Lukaku the gap with the others is getting bigger.”

Finally, Costacurta underlined how Juventus intrigue him ahead of the upcoming campaign.

“Yes, but a lot will depend on the recovery of Chiesa, one of the best players in Europe. If he recovers well Juve will fight with Inter. This will be the difference, the one that can shift the balance more than anyone else. More than Pogba.”
