Alessandro Costacurta has slammed Rafael Leao’s performance in the 0-0 draw against Tottenham in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, claiming the Portuguese was Milan’s ‘worst player on the pitch.’

Leao was taken off and replaced by Ante Rebic in the 88th minute of the stalemate at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, having failed to register a shot on target during his time on the pitch.

The 23-year-old has contributed with one goal in his eight appearances in the Champions League so far this campaign.

Recent performances have drawn widespread criticism, both in Europe and in Serie A, with Leao struggling to replicate the form that helped fire Milan to lift the Scudetto last season.

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia after the game, Costacurta claimed that Leao’s contribution against Tottenham was so little, that it was like playing against 10 men for certain spells of the game.

Out of the 15 players who featured for the Rossoneri on Wednesday, Cotacurta explained why Leao was Milan’s “Worst on the pitch.”

“It was like we were playing with a man down until the eighty-second minute,” he said. “He was the great disappointment of the evening.”

He continued: “I think he needs to be more determined. We had champions who stood up for the plate and are worthy of being labelled champions, and tonight he proved he is not one of the so-called champions.”
