Alessandro Costacurta believes Milan players have more responsibilities than Stefano Pioli and blames the Rossoneri strikers, except Rafael Leao and Olivier Giroud.
Milan suffered a 1-0 loss at San Siro against strugglers Udinese on Saturday night, so Pioli’s men are now six points below city rivals Inter and haven’t won any of the last four games across all competitions, collecting three defeats and one draw.
“This was a flat performance,” Costacurta told Sky Sport Italia after the game.
“Milan were good for 30 minutes against Juventus. PSG are a strong side, so it’s acceptable to lose against them. In Naples, they did well in the first half and even later, but this defeat is worrying because they have nothing in attack.
“Only Rafael Leao invents something once in a while. Giroud scored two goals in Naples, but the most alarming thing is when they need something from other players,” continued the former defender.
Luka Jovic had started the Udinese game in attack with Giroud but the Serbia international was replaced during the break and received the lowest ratings from Italian sports papers on Sunday morning.
Giroud scored Milan’s only two goals in the last four games in a 2-2 draw against Napoli last week.
The Rossoneri have yet to win a game following the international break in October, so Costacurta was asked who has more responsibility for this situation.
“I don’t know this environment. I came through tough times when the coach took responsibility and I think Stefano is doing so,” he said.
“What I think, however, is that Stefano has fewer responsibilities than his players.”
Costacurta played one season on loan at Monza but spent the rest of his career at Milan, playing 663 games with the Rossoneri.
The former Italy defender won the Champions League five times with the Diavoli and many other trophies, including seven Serie A titles and five Supercoppa Italiana.
