Italy’s Group D opponents Costa Rica have drawn their second World Cup friendly against Republic of Ireland.

The Central American nation played host to Martin O’Neill’s men overnight at PPL Park in Philadelphia, but the game didn’t get off to the best start with Kevin Doyle opening the scoring for the visitors within 20 minutes.

Their blushes were saved however, as Celso Borges netted a penalty on 65 minutes for a share of the spoils.

It could be an anxious few days for Giancarlo Gonzalez though, who was sent off for punching Doyle, leaving the striker with a bloody nose. The Costa Rican authorities could well take action against Gonzalez and is reportedly in danger of missing their opening game versus Uruguay on June 14.

The Azzurri face Costa Rica in Recife on June 20.
