Serse Cosmi’s Crotone debut did not go to plan with a 5-1 defeat against Atalanta, but he still ‘believes’ they can stay in Serie A.

The former Perugia coach was drafted in on Monday following Giovanni Stroppa’s dismissal, and Nwankwo Simy did score a temporary equaliser in Bergamo, but they were soon blown away.

“We all knew Atalanta’s quality and strength, I just wanted to understand the situation these players are in and how they handle situations psychologically too,” Cosmi told Sky Sport Italia.

“Aside from the immense talent of those we were up against, tonight I realised we cannot play from here to the end of the season without seven important players.

“Today we were without Vulic, Molina, Ounas, Di Carmine and others, many of them missed out right at the end. These were often starters at Crotone and I wish I could’ve started this experience with a few more options to choose from.”

Crotone are in a desperate situation, rock bottom with seven consecutive defeats.

“Of course we still believe, because football gives you an opportunity to believe. We just have to do everything possible to make the most of the opportunity. In the next game, we need a very different performance.”
